Energy Efficiency

Building Information Modeling for Sustainable Design
New software for building modeling made by Autodesk will help in some complex design strategies that take advantage of day lighting concepts. BIM can accurately measure day lighting, which is used to help reduce energy cost and increase comfort and productivity. The software can also compute material quantities and coordinate specification. Potentially it can help keep track of credits that are being tracked to earn LEED certification for a project.

Information Resources for Making Smart Choices and Energy
The US Department of Energy has initiated the Building Technologies Program, which is a partnership between the private and public sectors. Its goal is to develop “marketable designs for homes that produce as much energy as they use by the year 2025.”  The program goals are based on a whole-house design approach, tax credits, efficiency of windows, lighting, building envelope and increased HVAC efficiencies.   The program also focuses on increased IAQ, improved quality, durability and resale value, plus minimizing the environmental impact of a community.

Near-Zero Energy Home, Paterson, New Jersey Homeowner’s Manual
This homeowner’s manual is based on the LEED-H rating system which is currently being tested as a pilot program by the USGBC.  The manual provides homeowners with an overview plan for cleaning, pest control, appliances, mechanical, electrical, landscape and irrigation systems. The plan provides a schedule, maintenance procedures, and an overall maintenance plan including owner instruction manuals. The goal is to have the home operating at peak efficiency and maximizing IAQ.

Revit MEP; BIM for MEP Engineering
Revit is a modeling (BIM) software made by Autodesk to improve the design process for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering. The software can be used with conventional CAD and will help with the following concepts: holistic/integrated design, design and feedback, increased coordination, and enhanced communication.  This software can also be coordinated with the team’s structural engineers and architects using Revit for structure and architecture.
