In 2016, the National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB), will be changing some of the areas in which a candidate for architectural licensure must gain experience hours within the Intern Development Program (IDP). Hours for “Leadership and Service” (which can include contributing to Greendatabase!), will still be required, and the current experience requirement of 80 hours will not change. It falls within the Practice Management category. The real change is in the experience settings, specifically the O section, “Other Experiences”. There will be new learning areas in which to gain experience and others will be eliminated. It is a good idea for all IDP participants and mentors to review NCARB’s, New Experience Areas. Let’s hope that these changes will reflect the changing way that architects work, interact, and – most importantly – take responsibility for the environment and sustainability.
