The County of Lackawanna Transit System (COLTS) is building a new Intermodal Transportation Facility, near the former Scranton Lackawanna Railroad Station which has been repurposed as a Hotel, and is directly across the tracks from the Steam Town historic site. This new transportation hub will provide a comfortable, safe and attractive setting for riders of the local bus system, intercity bus lines, and the planned rail line. Sustainability is key to the design of this facility. Sowinski Sullivan Architects, PC (SSA) utilized sustainable strategies including site selection, conservation water use, storm water management, energy performance, and careful selection of materials. At this point the steel framing is beginning to rise out of the ground, shaping into the building footprint as well as an 18,700 square foot, bus canopy that is a green roof. The green roof is planned to help manage storm water on the site and help mitigate the heat island effect created by the surrounding parking lots.
